Florida Cosmetology Continuing Education

According to state law, a Florida cosmetologist must complete 16 hours of continuing education throughout each biennial license renewal cycle to retain and renew their license. Any continuing education course that a licensee wishes to get credit for must be submitted to the Board for approval before being taught by a registered continuing education provider. The state must approve the course, and the system must be current and valid.

Course for Cosmetology Education

  • Knowing the proper course and credit hours you need as part of the 16-hours of training you must finish is crucial for completing Florida Cosmetology license renewal education requirements. The state has defined particular subject matter that must address and the quantity of activity in credit hours required for each specialized area of study.
  • Individual courses for each of the critical areas of study are acceptable as long as the Board approves them for license renewal purposes, are current (i.e., have not expired), and equal the required number of hours for that field of study.
  • You can also take a 16-hour comprehensive continuing education program that combines all required subjects, topics, and subtopics outlined by Florida law into one continuing education program. As long as the Board approves it, each subject equals or exceeds the credit hours required by law for that particular area of study, and it is current.
  • The best approach to ensure you have finished the correct number of hours for each of the critical areas of study is to enroll in a 16-hour comprehensive continuing education program that contains the correct number of training hours for each of the required areas of study. It reduces organizational tidal waves.

Deadlines for the Registration

Completing 16 hours of continuing education and paying all state licensing costs before the renewal period deadline, which is every other October 31st, are Florida Cosmetology license renewal requirements. The renewal term is two years, and all renewal criteria must meet every two years before the deadline, which occurs every other year. To keep a current/active license or registration status, you must repeat the process every two years.

Final Thoughts

Failure to meet the deadlines impacts the status of the license or registration and the number of costs owing to the state. When criteria are not completed before the renewal cycle date, the status shifts to active/delinquent. A licensee or registrant in Florida cannot perform services for a fee, which means they cannot legally work.
